Whisky

Islay’s pure water, fertile soil and peat make it the perfect location for distilling whisky. All of Islay’s 8 Whisky Distilleries are set in beautiful surroundings and most offer tours, gifts shops and cafes. The closest to Tir nan Og is Ardbeg which has an impressive visitor centre, shop and restaurant.

We have many activities to suit all ages and abilities, from golfing on our beautiful 18 hole links course at Machrie on the Big Strand to Brown Trout and Salmon Fishing, pony trekking to cycling – not to mention stunning scenery and walks for the Birdwatchers and photographers.

History

Islay is steeped in history with lots of sites around the Island to investigate, from Prehistoric to Middle and Iron Ages, the Scottish Clans of the 16th & 17th Centuries, up to the 20th Century War Memorials. We have our own Museum of Islay Life showcasing Islay’s rich and interesting past.

Distillery Tours

As well as Ardbeg Distillery on our doorstep, Islay’s newest distillery, Kilchoman Distillery in the grounds of Rockside Farm near the beautiful Kilchoman bay is well worth a visit. There is a visitor centre with gift shop and café.

Based in Port Charlotte, they provide Family Activity Sessions and Nature Walks throughout the summer. Brush up on your species or learn for the first time about Islay’s varied wildlife so that you can do a bit of “spotting” while out and about.

Islay Woollen Mill

Visit the mill just outside of Bridgend. The plaid for the films Braveheart starring Mel Gibson and Rob Roy starring Liam Neeson was made here! A large selection of items in tartans, tweeds and other woven fabrics are available for sale.

Isle of Jura

Islay’s neighbouring island famous for her conical shaped “paps” and as the place George Orwell wrote 1984. Only minutes across the water from Port Askaig the ferry service runs approximately every half hour.

Distinctive pottery incorporating Celtic designs in tableware, lamp bases, vases and jugs. Persabus also fires models of some of Islay’s distinctive buildings such as the round Church and lighthouse at Carrick Fhada.

Museum & Visitor Centres

Islay is steeped in history, and for those interested, the Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte is a must, and the Library, full of archive material is also open to the public – both with a wide variety of objects on display appealing to all ages.
